According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, 3% to 12% of children are habitual snorers. IQ score, attention span, and memory indexes in children are adversely affected by snoring (Kennedy et al., 2004).
Additionally, 1% to 4% of children suffer from sleep-breathing disorders (Sinha & Guilleminault, 2010).
Children with obstructive sleep apnea consume 226% more health care services than children without obstructive sleep apnea (Reuveni et al., 2002). These children have 40% more visits to the hospital than children without OSA
as well as higher consumption of anti-infective and respiratory system drugs (Tarasiuk et al., 2007).
Early identification of sleep breathing disorders in your pediatric dental population can prevent developmental issues and overuse of the already strained US healthcare system.
As with adult OSA, approaching pediatric OSA from multiple perspectives is necessary for effective treatment. The ACSDD is proud to be the leading facilitator of multidisciplinary and preventative discourse.
In typical ACSDD tradition, our Fall 2011 conference on Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea, features an exceptional group of speakers. The speakers, all experts in their respective fields, come together to take a multidisciplinary look at OSA in the pediatric population.
We’ve managed to fit quite a bit into a two-day conference — ten pioneers in the field of sleep breathing disorders offering you 17 ADA-recognized continuing education credits. Feel free to take a look at our Fall 2011 Agenda for more information.
