Background

Through its 2006 update, The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) now recommends oral appliances as a first line treatment for snoring and mild to moderate OSA. Oral appliances are also indicated for patients who are not candidates for traditional therapies such as Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) and surgery, as well as patients who are CPAP intolerant. As a result of this update, the importance of developing and maintaining referral relationships with physicians becomes paramount to the dentist who is interested in embedding or who already has embedded dental sleep medicine into his or her dental practice.

Objectives

1) To introduce you, the dental sleep medicine practitioner, to the realities and the challenges involved in forming a multilevel and multidisciplinary relationship with physicians in the context of dental sleep medicine.

2) To provide you, the dental sleep medicine practitioner, with suggestions you can implement in your practice to benefit the ongoing relationship with your sleep-disordered breathing patient, the medical team, and you.
