You may be asking, "What exactly is a blog and how can it help my practice?" Think of our blog as a virtual extension of the ACSDD. We tried to think of ways to bottle up the passion, magic, and community feel that are hallmarks of the ACSDD get togethers. We came up with an online community with a dual purpose: to discuss current relevant research and a forum for you to ask (and of course receive answers to) your pressing sleep disorders related clinical questions. This community of scholars aims to act as a bridge so you can experience the magic of ACSDD get togethers throughout the year and from the comfort of your own home. Start today by emailing your questions to email@example.com.
Dear Diplomates, Members, and Friends of the Academy: Your Academy here, checking in. We have been busy preparing for our April 8th & 9th, 2011 conference, Multidisciplinary Treatment of Sleep-Disordered Breathing, here in Scottsdale, AZ, at the (in)famous Hotel Valley Ho. To see our outstanding line-up of speakers and to register, please go to our website at www.acsdd.org. Take advantage of the discounted member registration fee! I am very pleased and honored to announce our latest appointment to our distinguished faculty tream: Dr. John Tessendorf. Dr. Tessendorf has had a private practice in Eau Claire, Wisconsin since 1980, after attending the US Naval Academy and graduating from Marquette University School of Dentistry. His continued quest for knowledge and wanting to stay current with the newest innovations prompted him to explore laser dentistry. Dr. Tessendorf became Founder and Fellow of the American Academy of Laser Dentistry as well as a member of the Dental Education Council for CO2 Laser Applications and the International Society for Lasers in Dentistry. Being an expert in the field, Dr. Tessendorf has lectured and taught on Laser Dentistry throughout the United States and Canada. He is also certified in Oral Conscious Sedation, a member of the American Dental Association, the Wisconsin Dental Association, and a Diplomate of the ACSDD. Dr. Tessendorf has been working in a multidisciplinary paradigm with cardio-pulmonologists, neurologists, PCPs and ENTs to help in the treatment of patients with Sleep Disordered Breathing. In addition to his dental practice, he is currently the CEO of both Pacific Electronics Corporation and Advancing Dynamics Corporation. He also began Tess Corporation, a tooth brush manufacturing company with world wide distribution. Dr. Tessendorf was recognized for his entrepreneur abilities and mentoring of students [...]
Howdy, Pardners!! This is yer ol’ trail boss, Griz!! I hope this message finds you well and enjoying the New Year. I have good news to share, from a new name to new faculty. What's in a Name? As you may recall, I discussed the need to change the Academy name to more accurately reflect what we stand for. Our desire is to bridge the gap between the dentist and physician and all other relevant health-care practitioners in the treatment of sleep disorders. We are a collaboration of various disciplines in this regard. Our new name accurately conveys this: The Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorders Disciplines. Even with our new name, we are able to retain our ACSDD brand, and we retain control of all our previously-owned web domains. Moreover, the changes to our printed materials and website are minimal. But, more importantly, we now clearly communicate that we are an Academy of Disciplines coming together to treat sleep disorders. I want to thank all of you who shared your thoughts and considerations with me. Your input was most welcome and helpful, and I ask each of you to support our name change and continue to actively spread the word about your very different Academy. New Year, New Faces Allow me now to take a moment to introduce our new faculty members. Our first appointment is Wendy L. Wright, MS, RN, ARNP, FNP, FAANP. A 1992 graduate of the Adult Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program at Simmons College with a Master's of Science in Adult Primary Care Nursing, Wendy earned Post-Master’s Degree Certification in Primary Care Nursing of The Family at Simmon's College. Presently, Wendy is an adult and family nurse practitioner and the owner of [...]
You may recall that in various emails over the last few months and at our conferences and testing sessions, I discussed the need to change our Academy name to more accurately reflect what we stand for. We desire to bridge the gap between the dentist and physician and all other relevant practitioners in the treatment of sleep disorders. We are a collaboration of various disciplines in this regard, inviting all participants to the learning table, so to speak. There is an old saying, "Be careful what you ask for; you just might get it.” I asked, and you delivered! I want to thank those of you who shared your thoughts and considerations with me as regards ideas for our name change. Your input was most welcome and helpful. Our new name is The Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorders Disciplines. Because our initials remain ACSDD, we are able to retain our brand and control of all web domains. Changes to our printed materials and website will be minimal. But, much more importantly, we now communicate clearly that we are an Academy of Disciplines coming together to treat sleep disorders and improve the quality of life for the patients who suffer from them. I ask each of you to support our name change and continue to actively spread the word about your "very different” Academy. My personal thanks to each of you. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming conference here in Scottsdale, AZ, on April 8 & 9, 2011. Conference registration is available at our website http://acsdd.org. --Dr. Mike
Yeehhaaaawwww! That was the cowboy's yell that opened our November conference, Identifying & Managing At-Risk Populations, on November 5th & 6th at the Carefree Resort and Conference Center in Carefree, Arizona. I'll admit it; yours truly got a bit carried away. And it didn't stop with the yell! After that opener, our conference attendees were introduced to "Grizzly," "007," "Fuzzy," "Super Deepak," and "Mountie." To get the “cowboy lore” on whose names those are, you will need to attend our April 2011 conference. I am proud and pleased to announce that November's conference was a successful and valuable experience from all the comments and feedback we received. From your responses, we also learned a great deal about how and what we can do better for both our conference attendees and our exhibitor partners. You will see a number of improvements at our April 8 & 9, 2011 conference, Multi-Disciplinary Treatment of Sleep-Disordered Breathing, which will be held out here in Scottsdale, AZ. Our exact location will be forthcoming. Dr. Gilles Lavigne and Dr. David Gozal, two of our distinguished speakers at our November conference, resonated powerfully with the attendees. Our other speakers covered many topics that kept the audience interested and engaged. Our own Dr. Deepak Shrivastava engaged the group with a presentation about the future of sleep medicine. Dr. Nick Gidwani gave a brief presentation on maintaining personal balance in our busy lives. Nick’s comments gave me cause to reflect on staying focused on what’s really important in life. I know others were impacted positively as I was. After hearing Nick’s message, I realized that the Academy needs a voice to help all of us maintain personal balance in the oftentimes pressure-filled and demanding world we [...]
I am pleased and honored to announce two appointments to our growing and distinguished Academy faculty: David Shirazi, DDS, and Tim Adams, DDS. Dr. Shirazi is a highly accomplished dentist who lectures extensively. Dave also serves the Academy as our Conference Committee Chair. Dr. Adams is also an accomplished practitioner and lecturer. Tim also serves on the Academy Membership Committee and has recently earned Diplomate status in the Academy. In addition, they are both fantastic people and great contributors to our very different Academy. Their bios can be found under the Meet Our Team tab. - Mike

Dr. Gozal will serve as the ACSDD Special Project Chair. Dr. Gozal is a Herbert T. Abelson Professor and the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago as well as the Physician-and-Chief of the Comer Children's Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. He is also a founding member of the International Pediatric Sleep Association (IPSA). Dr. Krahe, ACSDD Executive Director, and Dr. Gozal will offer additional information on this Special Project at the November 2010 Conference.
The Academy is proud to share our good news with our members: We have been recognized by both the American Dental Association and the Academy of General Dentistry as a continuing education provider. This means that our continuing education offerings are written to the rigorous standards of the ADA and the AGD and that, on behalf of our member-dentists, we are able to submit those credits to both organizations easily. According to Jennifer, our Director of Scholarship & Compliance, the Continuing Education Office of the ADA was very impressed with our application and the structure and rigor inherent in our Continuing Education Program and in the Academy itself. The general rule of thumb for continuing education programs certified by the ADA is that they only receive one year of certification if the provider has not been in existence for less than a year. Although the Academy opened its doors December 17, 2009, the ADA awarded us three years. Our Director of Scholarship & Compliance states that this speaks to the rigor of the Academy and our drive to provide continuing education that excels in the field of Sleep Disorders Dentistry. Our Director of Scholarship & Compliance is also in the process of acquiring certification to provide continuing medical education which will broaden the scope of our curriculum and expose our members to even more of the evidence-based science available. Any questions can be directed to our Director of Scholarship & Compliance at firstname.lastname@example.org.
